Washington DC's U Street has been the center of the city's music scene for about a century. Most of the houses in the neighborhood were built between 1862-1900. In the early 1900's, The U Street corridor was the country's largest urban black community. After the Lincoln Theatre opened in 1921, and the Howard Theatre in 1926, the neighborhood became the the center of DC's legendary club scene. The strip has been called "Black Broadway" - a name coined by singer Pearl Bailey.
