11 MILES - PAVED / CRUSHED STONE The Capital Crescent Trail is a rail-to-trail bike path that runs between Georgetown and Bethesda. It is very popular with cyclists and rollerbladers, and it is used by bike commuters. The lower 7 miles are paved until you reach downtown Bethesda, the following 3 miles is crushed stone. The stretch from Georgetown to Bethesda has a slightly graded uphill, and riding the other direction has a slightly downhill grade. Located a couple miles outside Georgetown on Canal Road, Fletcher's Boat House is situated between the bike path and the Potomac River. Fletchers has a very large free parking lot, and they rent boat and bikes.

19 MILES - PAVED The Mount Vernon Trail is located in Virginia, just across the Potomac River. The trail runs along the Potomac between Theodore Roosevelt Island, located by Rossyln, VA, and Mount Vernon. The scenic trail runs along the side of National Airport, and travels through Old Town Alexandria - for about 20 blocks the path shares the street with cars. Two separate paths cut trough Old Town, and they both connect you back on the proper bike path. The path has occasional moderate hills, and the final mile before Mount Vernon has a steep climb. The Rossyln Metro Station is located neat the Theodore Roosevelt end, and the National Airport Metro is located on the path between Rossyln and Old Town.
